Blessings In A Backpack is a discreet program to feed food-insecure school children over the weekends by putting healthy, child friendly foods in a backpack. They are distributed to each child on Fridays, which contain breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus snacks for Saturday and Sunday. Currently Traverse City is serving 11 schools and giving out over 140 backpacks each week. The program is totally funded by generous donations from family and friends as well as local grants. For every $100 received, they are able to add one more child into the program for entire school year. Each backpack costs roughly $2.50.
